RULES
1.The Helsinki International Maj Lind Piano Competition will be arranged by
the Sibelius Academy on 24 May-7 June 2007. The competition is open to
pianists of all nationalities born in or after 1972.

6.COMPETITION PROCEDURE AND REPERTOIRE
There will be three rounds in the competition, all of which will be open to the public.
The order of works is free in the first and second rounds.

◆FIRST ROUND 25-29 May 2007-----------------------------
A maximum of 40 contestants will be accepted for the first round.
Repertoire:
1)      A prelude and fugue by J.S. Bach. Contestants may perform other music composed before 1750 in addition to this.
2)      A work by Dussek, Haydn, Clementi, Mozart, Beethoven, Hummel or Schubert lasting at least ten minutes.
3)      Three etudes, one from each of the following groups:
a. Chopin
b. Liszt, Alkan, Saint-Saëns, Rachmaninov, Scriabin. Alternatively, a toccata by Czerny or Schumann.
c. An etude composed in the 20th century, but not one by Scriabin and Rachmaninov. Alternatively, a toccata by Debussy, Ravel or Prokofiev.
4)  A programme of the contestant’s choice composed in or since 1960.
The total duration of the repertoire for the first round must be not more than 45 minutes.

◆SECOND ROUND 31 May -1 June 2007
A maximum of 14 contestants will be accepted for the second round.
Repertoire:
1) Either
a. one of the three works commissioned for the competition from Lauri Kilpiö, Joonas Pohjonen and Lotta Wennäkoski (approx. 10 min.)
or
b. a work of the contestant’s own composition (approx. 10 min.)
or
c. an improvisation lasting not more than 10 minutes on a theme given to the contestant 20 minutes before the performance

2) a Sibelius programme lasting at least 5 min.
3) a programme of the contestant’s own choice

The total duration of the repertoire for the second round must be not more than 60 minutes. The commissioned works will be sent to the applicants accepted for the competition by 24 March 2007.

◆FINALS 3 June and 6-7 June 2007
Six contestants will be accepted for the finals.
Repertoire:
1) One of the following piano trios:
Beethoven op. 70 no. 1 (Geistertrio)
Brahms c minor op. 101
Ravel
Shostakovich no. 2 e minor

2) One of the following concertos:
Bartók no. 2 or 3
Beethoven no. 3, 4 or 5
Brahms no. 1 or 2
Chopin no. 1 or 2
Englund no. 1
Grieg
Liszt no. 1 or 2
Prokofiev no. 2 or 3
Rachmaninov no. 2 or 3
Ravel G major or Concerto for the Left Hand
Saint-Saëns no. 2
Schumann a minor
Tchaikovsky no. 1

10.The organiser of the competition will have unlimited rights to broadcast the competition
performances on radio and television, to make audio and video tapes, films and records and
to show excerpts from competition performances on the Internet and other data networks.
